There is the kind of regret that you tuck away in a corner of your mind. And then there is the kind that comes back to haunt you, years later.

It is around this very regret – the one that creeps into family ties and refuses to fade away – that Fabio Marra builds the plot of The Colour of Memories.

At the heart of the story is Vittorio, an elderly, ailing artist – a brother, a father and a son. Revolving around him are his elder sister, his son, and also the dealer in his forged paintings. Each of them, in their own way, is linked to this past that resurfaces, and with which Vittorio is trying to come to terms.

To what extent can the consequences of a single event weigh on a person’s life? How can one carry on when one cannot forgive oneself? The Colour of Memories explores these questions with delicacy and irony, in a play where the biting edge of Fabio Marra’s perspective is gradually tinged with tenderness.

Family, I hate you… really?
