Cappella Mediterranea

Music

The Cappella Mediterranea ensemble was founded in 2005 by the Swiss-Argentine conductor Leonardo García-Alarcón, originally to perform Latin Baroque music.

With over fifty concerts a year, Cappella Mediterranea explores a wide-ranging repertoire, from madrigals to polyphonic motets, including oratorios and operas.

In just a few years, the ensemble has made a name for itself through the rediscovery of previously unperformed works such as Michelangelo Falvetti’s Il Diluvio universale and Nabucco, as well as by presenting new interpretations of works from the repertoire such as Monteverdi’s L’Orfeo and Bach’s Mass in B minor.

In 2019, the ensemble played a key part in the triumphant production of Rameau’s LesIndes Galantes at the Opéra Bastille. In 2022, Cappella Mediterranea made a name for itself with two successful opera productions: Lully’s Atys in Geneva and Versailles, directed by Angelin Preljocaj, and Monteverdi’s L’Incoronazione di Poppea, directed by Ted Huffman at the Festival d’Aix-en-Provence, which was subsequently revived in Versailles, Valence and Toulon.

In 2024, the ensemble took part in its first Mozart opera, Idomeneo, at the Grand Théâtre de Genève, followed by a daring reinterpretation of Bach’s St John Passion, choreographed by Sasha Waltz, in Salzburg, Dijon and at the Théâtre des Champs-Élysées. The ensemble begins 2025 with I Grotteschi at La Monnaie (Brussels), an ambitious production based on Monteverdi’s operas, and Les Indes galantes – De la voix des âmes, a choreographed concert version of Rameau’s opera with choreographer Bintou Dembélé in Paris, Lyon, Bordeaux, Madrid, The Grange Festival and São Paulo.

In September, Cappella Mediterranea makes its debut at the Bayreuth Baroque Festival with a new rediscovery of a work by Francesco Cavalli: Pompeo Magno, directed by Max-Emmanuel Cencic. 2026 sees Cappella Mediterranea return to the Paris Opera with the world premiere of Ercole Amante by composer Antonia Bembo, directed by Netia Jones at the Opéra Bastille, and to the Aix-en-Provence Festival with Mozart’s The Magic Flute, directed by Clément Cogitore.

Cappella Mediterranea’s discography comprises more than thirty critically acclaimed recordings. Among the most recent releases are Jean-Baptiste Lully’s Atys (Château de Versailles Spectacles), which won the award for Best Recording at the 2025 International Opera Awards, and Handel / Colonna: Dixit Dominus & Missa concertata with the Namur Chamber Choir (Ricercar). In 2026, a recording of the oratorio La Passione di Gesù, Leonardo García-Alarcón’s first major composition, was released.

The Cappella Mediterranea ensemble is supported by the Ministry of Culture – DRAC Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes, the Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes Region, the City of Geneva, a Swiss family foundation, a private Geneva-based foundation, Vincent Meyer, Brigitte Lescure, Hugues & Emma Lavandier, Christian & Margaret Hureau, as well as by its Circle of Friends and its Circle of Entrepreneurs, which includes Diot-Siaci, Chatillon Architectes, Synapsys, Bred Banque Populaire and 400 Partners.

The ensemble is a member of Fevis (Federation of Specialised Vocal and Instrumental Ensembles) and the CNM (National Centre for Music).
