Mathilde Monnier

Dance

Having taken up dance later in life, following her experience as a dancer with the companies of Viola Farber and François Verret, Mathilde Monnier began to take an interest in choreography in 1984, alternating between group works and solo or duet pieces.

From one piece to the next, she defies expectations by presenting work that is constantly evolving.

Her artistic explorations centre on the representation of movement, linked to broader themes such as the collective, the relationship with music, and memory; she plays with the deconstruction of choreographic notation and the language of dance.

Mathilde Monnier alternates between creating solo projects and collaborative works with various figures from the art world, which allows her to venture into the fields of literature, music, cinema and fashion. She is also deeply involved in, and particularly active in promoting, dance, dance training and artists’ working conditions.

Mathilde Monnier received the Ministry of Culture Prize at the Bagnolet competition in 1983, the SACD Grand Prix in 2002, and was awarded the title of Knight of the Legion of Honour in 2013.
